This was a commission for the new marina in Egg Harbor, Wisconsin. My great interest in the wind has led me to rebuild many 1930's Wincharger generators, the world's first wind turbines, and to create sculptures based on American weathervanes. But a billowing sail in steel?
The mast is straightforward, a length of round tubing. Straight lines will not do for the wind, but a series of crescents together seemed to fill with the wind. I used marine hardware to tie this sculpture together with stainless bolts and acorn nuts. The electrostatic paint process was used to apply the blue of marine canvas, which in turn references the color of brisk, blowing, sunny days on Green Bay.
